Concerns and Objections you might hear at a meeting

You may, on occasion, encounter people who object to contributing to United Way. Keep in mind that objections are a natural part of the campaign and offer you an opportunity to present more information. Here are some insights into the psychology of objections and suggestions for handling them:

"My investment does not go where it is needed most."

Laurens County United Way awards grants to address the greatest needs of the most vulnerable persons in our community. Community volunteers decide where your investment is most needed. These teams of volunteers review and evaluate each program application and decide upon the level of funding to award each program. In addition, United Way has its own annual audit conducted by an outside accounting firm to make certain the donor gifts are used properly.

"My investment does not go where I want it to."

Your donation is invested in the General Fund which supports our  partner programs. If you prefer, gifts may be designated to a specific non-profit health and human service agency.

"I already have a group of charities I support. Why should I give to United Way, too?"

We all have our favorite charities, but the needs in our community are much larger than any one agency can meet. United Way is your community solutions provider and is uniquely positioned to both identify the current and emerging needs, as well as providing targeted solutions. Our broad mix of programs and services help our entire community.

"My spouse already donates for the both of us."

United Way depends on the generous support of everyone in the community. By everyone doing their part, we can continue to provide these critical services to those in need.  A couple’s individual gifts are combined and recognized as leadership gifts when they total $500 or more.

"I can’t afford to give this year with the struggling economy."

We realize that many in our community are struggling. Times are tough, but especially for our most vulnerable neighbors. EVERY SINGLE DONATION COUNTS. We encourage you to give what you can of your time, talents and treasures. Working together through these tough times creates hope for a better tomorrow.

"My investment does not matter."

Your investment in your community is what matters. Without your support, Laurens County United Way and many local non-profits would not be able to provide the level of support currently delivered. When you reach out a hand to one person, you influence the condition of all. Your investment does make a difference.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER:

Objections are not personal

Remember, they are not directed at you.

Objections are often based on incorrect information

Try to identify the real issue.

Show sympathy

Listen carefully and show your concern. This does not mean you agree, but that you care about the concern.

Do not argue

Instead, offer information about the many ways United Way helps people, or offer to discuss the issue further after the group meeting.

Encourage the objector to talk

Allow the person voicing the objection an opportunity to expand on it at length. An insecure, illogical or poorly though-out objection will fail on its own.

Relax and be yourself

You have ideas to present, so be straightforward in your presentation. Asking for someone’s participation or gift is not a “win/lose” situation.

Do not be afraid to say you don’t know

Let those with questions know you will get back to them with an answer. Tell them they can call Laurens County United Way at 833-3623 or visit our website at www.uwlc-online.org

Remember! Education not Coercion

The most responsive donors are those who have an opportunity to become informed and involved. Experience clearly shows that coercion creates animosity, hinders communication and understanding, and can lead to decreased support.
